Are you nervous about teaching science to your homeschooler?
When I speak with homeschooling parents, one of their greatest concerns is how to teach a subject they don’t like or a subject that they, themselves, struggled with in school.
Science tends to be one of those subjects that makes homeschooling parents a bit nervous.
The truth is, you don’t have to be anxious about teaching science! There are loads of resources to support you through homeschooling this subject!

IT’S EVERYWHERE!
Science is everywhere! You simply have to draw your children’s attention to it! For example, you can collect specimens to place on a table (i.e. rocks, a vase of flowers, a piece of driftwood, etc.). You can also make observations about the weather, clouds, and the stars.
A MONTHLY SCIENCE SUBSCRIPTION CLUB
Subscription clubs are a wonderful solution to help you present science information to your children. It’s fresh, exciting, and often the subscriptions include materials and instructions to do experiments.
Three popular science subscriptions are:

KIWI CRATE
BOOKS
So you know nothing about anything science-related… that’s okay… books are here to help! Go to your local library and take out some books you can read with your children. If your kids are interested in a particular subject (i.e. butterflies), then give them books about that topic.
SCIENCE VIDEOS
DVDs are a fabulous resource for teaching kids about science. The Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy are a couple of our favourites.
There are also LOADS of science-based You Tube channels. With a little bit of digging you can find videos about virtually anything!
DO A NATURE STUDY
Unit studies are a wonderful way to dig into a science topic. My kids love the NaturExplorers unit studies by Our Journey Westward! There are so many topical unit studies to choose from and there are MANY activities to explore!
These unit studies even include notebooking sheets! It’s such a lovely and simplified way to teach science.
Here’s some additional information if you’re looking to do nature studies with your children.
FIELD TRIPS
Look in your community for science-based field trips that you can take with your children. Here are some ideas of places to explore:
- Science center
- Botanical gardens
- Museum
- Science department of a university or college
- Zoo
- Observatory
As you can see, there are many ways to include science in your homeschool. You don’t need to be a science whiz in order to teach it… you simply need to seek out resources for you and your children.

I’m always looking for ways to help the kids with science. My youngest son is obsessed and while I buy books, I never thought of doing a subscription. Thanks for that idea.

I love your blog. We frequently use a local library downtown to find science books. Additionally we watch a lot of science TV shows and discuss science articles at teatime. We make extensive use of unit studies and go on trips to museums and zoos etc.
I have some new ideas for science lessons now. Thank you very much. We are currently planning on visiting our local garden centre to see the animals and make notes on their behaviour too.
Science need not be dull or boring. It is packed full of potential for creativity and stimulation.
